BRIGHTON, N.Y. — News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean continues to investigate faulty fines from traffic cameras, uncovering another case where the system charged the wrong person.
Michelle Doyle bought a car online from Carvana that was delivered in March. A toll camera captured the flatbed getting on the New York State Thruway near Syracuse. But instead of charging the license plate on the truck — the Indiana plate that says Carvana — the camera charged the plate on Doyle’s car.
“It’s hard to fight back on it”
Brean met Doyle and the car in Brighton to investigate the error.
“So this is another example of an automated traffic enforcement camera just not getting it right,” Brean said.
“100%. 100%. I laughed at this,” Doyle said. “Truthfully. I laughed at it when I first got it.”
“And there’s a lot of people getting caught up with charges that they don’t deserve,” Doyle said. “And it’s very hard to fight back on it.”
That’s the experience of Christy O’Meara. Her EZ Pass got drained in June when cameras on the Mario Cuomo Bridge read her license plate on someone else’s truck.
“They know what’s wrong”
“They know what’s wrong. I know what’s wrong but there’s so much paperwork and things they have to do to rectify it,” O’Meara said.
Both O’Meara and Doyle contacted Brean right after they saw his story with Celia Johnson in Chili. She drives a small white car. But New Jersey is fining her unpaid tolls for a big dark SUV because the traffic camera misread the license plate.
The Carvana immediate fix
Just hours after Brean emailed Carvana, it contacted the Thruway Authority and paid the outstanding toll. Carvana called Doyle and apologized.
“I asked them how are you going to prevent this from happening to other people?” Doyle said.
“We are working on resolving this problem,” Doyle said.
The Carvana flatbeds have EZ Pass but for some reason the truck carrying Doyle’s car didn’t connect. The Thruway Authority waived the fees for Carvana and cleared the charge from Doyle’s account. According to a study from Washington State, traffic cameras are accurate 95% of the time. News10NBC asked the Thruway what its accuracy rate is, but it hasn’t answered with a number yet.
