Chicago Cubs Sign Outfielder Greg Jones to a Minor League Deal ...Middle East

The Chicago Cubs have brought in some outfield depth at Triple-A Iowa, signing Greg Jones to a minor league deal, per the transaction register.

Jones, 28, was primarily with the Brewers at Triple-A this year (hitting .289/.423/.380/126 wRC+), though he did get a couple brief call-ups for some fill-in duty. Earlier this month, he was DFA’d, cleared waivers, and opted for free agency, where he signed with the Cubs.

A speed-and-glove outfielder (and former first round pick of the Rays), Jones has never hit for a ton of power, but takes his walks and steals a lot of bases. The strikeouts have long been a significant issue, though, particularly for a guy who doesn’t hit for power.

With the Cubs, Greg Jones figures to be outfield depth in the event of shorter-term needs at the big league level, and/or if the Cubs decide they want additional speed in September. Presently, Kevin Alcantara and Justin Dean are filling a similar role with the big league Cubs, but the Iowa Cubs had been down to just Brett Bateman and Chas McCormick as traditional outfielders on the roster.

Bonus? Ask him anything and everything that he knows about the Brewers (and that the Brewers know about the Cubs). Scouting reports, tendencies, coaching styles, and on and on. Why not?
