BRIGHTON, N.Y. — A longtime member and leader of Brighton Volunteer Ambulance was laid to rest on Tuesday. Loved ones and fellow first responders gathered for the funeral for EMT Dennis Mietz, who died at age 70 earlier this month.
Mietz is credited with saving 120 lives and delivering eight babies. He served with Brighton Volunteer Ambulance for 38 years, including as the board president and a board member. He also served as an emergency medical technician, life support provider, medic, and driver.
News10NBC saw vehicles from Brighton Volunteer Ambulance and other first responder agencies escorting the hearse during the funeral procession. Mietz was the longest-serving member of Volunteer Ambulance, logging 30,000 hours. News10NBC spoke with Mietz back in 2024 about a $440,000 state grant for Brighton Volunteer Ambulance’s equipment upgrades. A Facebook post from the ambulance service describes Mietz as a role model. It reads in part:
“He was known not only for his business acumen and leadership, but for the wisdom he shared with others — reminding us often to be available for people and truly listen to them. Even as his health declined, Dennis continued to give everything he had to serve BVA. He cared deeply for BVA, our employees and the Brighton community in which he lived.”
“Dennis was a man of many talents and interests. He was not only a successful entrepreneur but had also been a commercial airline pilot and played Division 1 hockey. More importantly, Dennis was a leader, a mentor, a friend, and a cherished member of the BVA family. His impact on BVA and on everyone who knew him cannot be measured. BVA is the agency it is today in large part because of Dennis, and he will be dearly missed.”
