GENEVA, N.Y. — The City of Geneva is looking to crack down on irresponsible riders.
A potential new law aims to restrict things like e-bikes, e-scooters and skateboard riders throughout Geneva. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with city officials about the restrictions riders could face.
In just the hour he was in Geneva, Kowalski saw at least half a dozen e-bike or e-scooter riders of all ages riding either in the street or on the sidewalk, most without a helmet. Many weren’t obeying traffic laws. It’s why the City Council is exploring the idea of placing harsher restrictions on e-bike and e-scooter riders.
City Council’s reasons
“It allows e-bikes, but it doesn’t allow anarchy on e-bikes,” said James Petropoulos, the Councilmember leading the charge on the potential new law.
The law aims to ban things like riding on sidewalks, riding while under the influence and prevent anyone under the age of 16 from riding. It would apply not just to e-bikes, but anything powered by a motor — either electric or gas powered.
“In Canandaigua, [an accident] did happen. Some kid got seriously injured. Thankfully not life threatening, but, you know, and, a 66-year-old lady was driving the car. She didn’t get ticketed, but I can only imagine how traumatic that is. And I don’t want it to happen here,” Petropoulos said.
Local reactions
People in the City of Geneva seem to be in favor of restrictions too.
“I don’t see why it would be a bad idea at all. It’s increasing safety for [riders] and drivers who have to swerve to avoid them,” said Anna Conklin.
Conklin is in Geneva visiting her friend, who teaches at a local school.
“She is a teacher, you know, and she cares about her littles so much. She does not want to see any of them coming into contact with those bikes,” said Conklin.
If one of Conklin’s friend’s students is found to be breaking this potential new law, that student’s parent could face fines or penalties. Conklin adds, unsafe or underage riders isn’t anything unique to Geneva.
“I’m from a neighborhood in Baldwinsville, and we kind of have a a large population of e-bikes, specifically with the kids, and not all of them follow the rules of traffic. And we honestly get kind of scared for them,” Conklin said.
Other local bans
The City of Geneva is expected to vote on that restriction in September.
Dangerous electric bike and scooter riders have been a sore spot for towns and cities across the area. In both Rochester and Ogden, it’s illegal for anyone under 16 to operate an e-bike or e-scooter. You also can’t drive them on sidewalks.
The Village of Pittsford is considering banning all e-bikes and scooters from sidewalks. According to New York State law, no one can ride them on sidewalks unless allowed by a local law or ordinance.
