The City of Highland Park has released more details after a shooting Monday night left a 30-year-old man in critical condition and prompted an hours-long shelter-in-place, with the suspect or suspects still at-large as the investigation continues.
The shooting unfolded about 8 p.m. in the 300 block of Walker Avenue in Highland Park, police said, on the border of neighboring communities Highwood and Fort Sheridan.
At the time, the city of Highland Park described the incident as a “rapidly evolving situation” and placed residents in the immediate area under a shelter-in-place.
“Residents in the area should not open doors or windows to unexpected visitors, and should call 911 with any concerns,” the city said in a social media post at 8:08 p.m. “Individuals should avoid the area.”
According to police, a 30-year-old man was shot during the incident and was transferred to a nearby hospital in critical condition. An update from the city released at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday said his was condition was improving.
The update said a preliminary investigation revealed the shooting occured between people who know each other. Investigators also said they identified two persons of interest in the shooting, who were seen talking with the victim before the incident occured.
As of Tuesday morning, police were still searching for them.
“They are considered witnesses or potential suspects,” the city said. “If you see them, please call 911.”
The investigation drew a large emergency response from other nearby law enforcement agencies and the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, with police using drones and canines. About 10:40 p.m., the shelter-in-place was lifted as police said they believed the suspects fled the area.
Police officers will remain in the area as the investigation continues, the city said.
