Toto Wolff has hailed Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable transformation from a struggling Formula 1 rookie into a dominant championship leader, crediting the Mercedes driver’s newfound composure and maturity for unlocking his immense potential.
Twelve months ago at Spa-Francorchamps, Antonelli endured one of the most difficult weekends of his fledgling career, battling mistakes, disappointing qualifying results and the weight of expectation as Mercedes’ teenage gamble faced its toughest test yet.
Fast forward to 2026, and the Italian has become one of the sport’s defining performers.
Antonelli returned to Belgium last weekend as a completely different driver, delivering a commanding victory that strengthened his grip on the championship.
His sixth career win – and sixth triumph of the season – extended his advantage to 45 points over Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, while George Russell’s opening-lap retirement left him another five points further adrift.
The contrast between the error-prone teenager Mercedes placed its faith in last season and the composed 19-year-old leading the title race today could hardly be more striking.
From raw talent to complete racer
For Wolff, the key ingredient behind Antonelli’s meteoric rise has not simply been speed. It has been maturity.
“We're all surprised,” Wolff admitted following the Italian’s triumph at Spa.
“I think the first season came as expected. Great moments where his talent shined through, and moments which were very difficult – you know, the long spell of the lack of results in the middle of the season – as expected.

“And then after the winter, also as expected, he knew the environment, he knew the pressures, he knew the demands of the team on the technical side, on the marketing side, knowing the tracks that we would go racing [at].”
For Wolff, the biggest surprise has been how quickly Antonelli has developed the mental tools required to succeed at the highest level.
The raw pace was never in doubt. What changed was the way the young Italian approached setbacks, analysed problems and handled pressure.
The ‘serenity and structure’ behind the victories
While Antonelli’s spectacular performances have attracted attention, Wolff believes his greatest strength is the emotional control he has displayed throughout the season.
Rather than allowing victories or disappointments to dictate his mindset, Antonelli has maintained a remarkably methodical approach — something Wolff sees as unusual for such a young driver.
“But what was not expected is the serenity and structure that he brought into his game,” Wolff explained.
“With Kimi, whether the session was good or bad, you wouldn't see a difference in emotions in the debrief. It is absolutely transactional. What is the problem? How do we solve it? How do we move on? A
“And that is new. And I think that's why, you know, it's almost, when he wins you can't see this absolute excitement that a 19-year-old would almost have.”

That composure has been tested throughout the year. Mechanical failures and difficult weekends have provided moments where frustration could easily have taken over, but Wolff highlighted Antonelli’s ability to respond with unusual perspective.
“At the same time, [when] he fails to deliver results... In Barcelona, when we had the car stoppage, or even in Silverstone, he comes back in and he was the one saying to the team, ‘Well, this is a mechanical sport, these things can happen’ – 19 years old!
“That is very, very impressive to see. And I think this mindset and this attitude is probably one of the main drivers that has allowed the talent to shine so early in his career.”

For Mercedes, the transformation has been a dream scenario. The teenager who once looked overwhelmed by Formula 1’s demands is now setting the pace at the front of the grid – and leading the championship with the confidence of a seasoned veteran.
A year ago at Spa, Antonelli was searching for answers. This time, he left Belgium with another victory, a commanding points advantage and the growing reputation of a future world champion.
