On Monday, July 20, Pamela shared an emotional tribute marking the first anniversary of her son’s death. Posted to his memorial Instagram account, @mjwlivinglegacy, the note described a year filled with grief, painful discoveries and personal growth. “Today has come so very quickly,” she began. “It is amazing how a year of pain, hurt, loss, emotional de-stabilization, and most importantly growth, has come and sits here before me.”

She continued, “It is the parent that leaves first and leaves the child/children to continue on with their lives. But what do you do when this is out of order and the child/children leave first?”

Reflecting on the day Malcolm-Jamal died and the anniversary that followed, Pamela shared the question that continues to weigh on her. “This is where I found myself July 20, 2025. And this is what I awoke to July 20, 2026,” she wrote. “How can I be here and my child is not?”

“I believe there is always a lesson in unpleasant and pleasant experiences. I believe that we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

The experience also showed her the worst and best of those around her. “During my year long journey, I have discovered how cruel, evil and greedy a human can be,” she wrote. “I have also discovered the depth of love, care, concern and support that humans are capable of.”

Pamela described Malcolm-Jamal as a gifted and compassionate man who believed people could always become better versions of themselves. “He had a heart of gold,” she wrote. “He was insightful and had a real good read of human nature.”

Pamela said they built Malcolm-Jamal’s career together, with him in front of the camera and her handling the business behind the scenes. “He was the star, the face of Mal Jam Inc.,” she wrote. “I was the support system that allowed him to soar unencumbered with the business of ‘show business.’”
