We knew the Cubs wanted to try him in a utility role for 2026, but is that really how they would play things in the years ahead? Would they convert him to a full-time corner outfielder, even knowing that this was a Gold Glove finalist at third base, and you ding a lot of his value that way? (Also, knowing that the system is extremely deep in outfielders, and also has near-term bats like Pedro Ramirez and Moises Ballesteros, who might also have to be accommodated some how?)
For his part, Matt Shaw has taken quite well to the utility role, playing all over the field (including some spots that are new for him), while holding his own trying to improve at the plate against top pitching that he doesn’t get to face every day or with any kind of consistency. On the season, Shaw has hit .246/.322/.415/105 wRC+ over 147 PAs, which you would take absolutely every time from a guy who has capably played at least 7.0 innings this year at six different positions (four of which were brand new for him).
Still, everything that opened up those questions before the season persist today (and, frankly, the emergence of Ramirez probably complicate them more). If Shaw were healthy, would the questions be just as loud?
Matt Shaw is currently recovering from a hand injury with an uncertain timeline for his return. I don’t think it’s the kind of injury or issue that would dramatically change his trade value, but it does make the conversation a little more difficult to have, not knowing when he’ll be back on the field and how the Cubs will use him. My gut says that we won’t see SIGNIFICANT and/or SPECIFIC SOURCED Shaw trade rumors until and unless he’s back on the field – or the bench – but we don’t know when that will be. Speculation at a distance? Yeah, sure. That’ll still be a thing. It always is.
Whatever rumors do come up, Shaw will continue to do his best to ignore them.
“The only time I’ll know if I’m in trade talk is when a family member says, ‘Hey, I read this,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know that,’” Shaw told the Sun-Times. He conceded that, last year, he was “reading every news article about the team because I didn’t know anything,” and he allowed himself to get caught up in that swirl. From that, he learned that it’s better for him to just ignore everything.
It’s a very human thing to want to know what people are saying about you, but I would guess that, for the vast majority of players, it does them no good to read it. Don’t read this, Matt Shaw, or anything else that pops up over the next two weeks.
