West Virginia University will add two more breaststroke specialists to its women’s swimming and diving team this fall, with Gabriella Marim and Lizzie Yon each announcing their commitments to swim for the Mountaineers starting in the fall of 2026.
Marim graduated from Stanton College Prep in Jacksonville, Florida, and currently trains with the Bolles School Sharks, where she excels at breast, fly and IM. At the Florida Swimming Senior Championships in March, she logged a series of top performances. She won the 200 breast in 2:18.74 after setting a best time of 2:18.51 during prelims, and she took 2nd in the 100 breast (1:03.09 – PB), 50 fly (25.66 – PB) and 200 IM (2:08.20 – SB). Marim also set a best time of 29.53 during the prelims of the 50 breast before placing 5th overall in 30.05.

100 breast – 1:03.09 200 breast – 2:18.51 100 fly – 59.22 200 IM – 2:07.33Yon recently graduated from Ravenwood High School in Tennessee, where she trains with Nashville Aquatic Club and specializes in breast, fly and IM. Yon turned in a series of top performances at the 2025 Winter Junior Championships in December; she contested the 200 breast (2:16.25), 100 fly (55.85) and 200 IM (2:02.64), setting a best time in each event. A few months later, she raced at the TISCA (Texas Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association) State Championship, where she placed 4th in the 100 breast (1:03.11 – PB) and 200 IM (2:03.39).

100 breast – 1:03.11 200 breast – 2:16.25 100 fly – 55.85 200 IM – 2:02.64A Division I program in the Big 12 Conference, the WVU women finished 10th at this past season’s conference championships. To earn a second swim at the 2026 Big 12 Conference Championships, it took times of 1:02.98/2:17.21 in the 100/200 breast, 2:03.25 in the 200 IM and 54.91 in the 100 fly. Based on their lifetime best times, Yon would have landed in the ‘C’ final in the 200 breast, while Marim would have been just outside the cutoff in each of her top events.
This past season, the Mountaineers only had one swimmer make it to the finals of the 100 breast, with Sofia Deste landing in the ‘C’ final, while the team did not have any swimmers earn a second swim in the 200 breast. With Deste not on the roster for the coming season, Marim and Yon will help strengthen WVU’s lineup in the breaststroke discipline.
The full list of recruits joining Marim and Yon in the pool this fall includes Evelyn Quick, Aivleen Walsh, Abby Hill, Maggie Wright, Ireland Gilligan, Taylor Clements, Scoutyn Jackson and Rowan Baglole, who should all make for strong training partners throughout their four years together.
