Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities launched on Saturday, July 18, 2026, a comprehensive project to upgrade internal roads and enhance visitor services at the Saqqara archaeological site, one of the country’s most important cultural heritage destinations.
Implemented by the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), the project aims to improve infrastructure at the site in line with its status as a major world heritage location, while increasing its capacity to accommodate growing numbers of Egyptian visitors and international tourists.

Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy said the project reflects Egypt’s vision of developing archaeological sites through an integrated approach that combines the preservation of their unique historical value with upgrading infrastructure and visitor facilities.
He added that the project will help strengthen Saqqara’s position as one of the world’s leading archaeological and tourism destinations, while supporting efforts to protect and sustainably develop Egypt’s cultural heritage.

Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Hisham al-Leithy said the project includes upgrading the internal road network within the archaeological area to facilitate movement between different monuments and attractions.
He stressed that all development works will comply with international technical and engineering standards applied at archaeological sites, ensuring the preservation of Saqqara’s archaeological significance and historic character.
The improvements will provide a safer and more convenient environment for visitors while ensuring smoother movement for Egyptian visitors and tourist groups.
Director General of the Saqqara Archaeological Area, Amr al-Tayeb, said the project also includes a comprehensive package of service upgrades, including the installation of seating areas, the construction of shaded areas at key points to protect visitors from direct sunlight, and the improvement of various facilities.
He added that these measures aim to enhance the overall quality of visits and upgrade the visitor experience in accordance with international best practices for archaeological site management.
