Hair transplants, veneers and copying clothes – inside Wayne Rooney’s glow-up ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

As another World Cup draws to a close; England may have once again loved and lost, but there’s one sure winner before the final whistle: Wayne Rooney.

It seems like, after leaving a series of dreary-sounding coaching and managing jobs at provincial football clubs to become a £400,000-a-year BBC expert (he reportedly signed a two-year contract on £800k), he’s bounding out of the dugouts and into the studio with a glossier, happier kind of look.

Rooney, who has faced harsh criticism for his appearance throughout his career, has previously been frank about his insecurities. In 2011, he admitted to cosmetic procedures, writing on X: “Just to confirm I have had a hair transplant. I was going bald at 25, why not? I’m delighted with the result.”

And in 2025, after years of being – unfavourably and unfairly – compared to both Shrek and Cristiano Ronaldo, he told Rio Ferdinand’s podcast: “I’m actually very insecure about a number of things. I have been my whole career over my weight, over how I look”.

So how did he make this transformation? We spoke to several experts to find out.

Teeth

Rooney’s teeth have always been charmingly gappy and British, debuting as a player for Everton with a little chip on a front gnasher. But now he’s doing two video-recorded podcasts per week and regularly talking on TV, that’s changed.

Dr Jennifer Owens, dentist at Reborne Longevity, tells The i Paper that Rooney has been building up to this point for a while: “In my opinion, it looks like Wayne had crowns on his two front teeth years ago, along with general patching up (composite fillings) and whitening.

“It looks to me like within the last 18 months he has had further whitening, replacement of composite fillings and replacement of his crowns. The new crowns appear wider potentially in an effort to close the gaps a little more.”

As for the little lisp Rooney developed, this will likely have occurred “when the shape of the teeth are changed with crowns or veneers”, says Owens.

Hair

Rooney admitted to that hair transplant 15 years ago, when such surgery was reserved only for the uber-rich rather than anyone who’s got a couple of grand, a ticket to Turkey and a bucketload of trust. But how has Rooney’s new(ish) pelt stood the test of time?

Dr Roshan Vara, a hair transplant surgeon at the Treatment Rooms, said “Rooney’s hair transplant looks nice and mature, and his surgeon seems to have chosen an appropriate hairline position for an age-appropriate look”.

“As he underwent surgery at a relatively young age, it could be likely he has had further surgeries to keep up with his receding hairline and considered measures to prevent hair loss, such as minoxidil and finasteride.

“Ultimately, however, even Rooney is limited by his donor area capacity and it is important that his surgeon manages this well to ensure he sports a natural-looking hairstyle for years to come”.

Should Rooney run out of donor hair, “his surgeon may consider using beard hair to transplant over to his scalp and combining this with scalp micropigmentation to create the illusion of having thicker hair and greater density in areas that have continued to thin.”

Weight

Rooney definitely looks to have shorn off just not his beard but a few pounds too. Dr Sam Robson, medical director and founder at Temple Clinic in Aberdeen, says “the tempting thing is to speculate that, because he’s a celebrity, he must be on a GLP1 [weight-loss drugs].

“But the reality is, I’m not aware that he’s admitted [being on a GLP1], but he is somebody who knows all about fitness, access to personal trainers, maybe he’s cut back on his alcohol, he’s maybe eating better. And maybe his wife is advising him. So I think we can’t leap to a conclusion.” Wayne has credited Coleen with helping him cut down on booze and nights out.

Dr Robson adds that the pressure of being a pundit might be evidenced in his weight loss: “Maybe he feels he maybe he feels he has to up his game… maybe he’s reached an age and stage in his life where his own health and longevity actually matters to him.

“He might have used a GLP1, but I would be more convinced that he’s embracing a healthy lifestyle and having all the benefits of that.”

Skin

After some ups and downs of his eyebrows alone, Rooney has a far more settled complexion, with consultant dermatologist Dr Aiza Jamil saying: “Wayne Rooney appears to have undergone a noticeable improvement in his complexion.

“From recent photographs, his skin appears smoother, brighter and more even in tone. These changes could potentially be attributed to a combination of professional skincare treatments and lifestyle factors.”

Those potential – but of course, unconfirmed – procedures, include “chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microneedling, radiofrequency treatments and prescription-strength skincare containing ingredients such as retinoids and antioxidants. In some cases, injectable treatments such as polynucleotides or skin boosters may also be used.”

In addition, “lifestyle changes such as getting adequate sleep, a balanced diet, limiting alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking also play a significant role in maintaining healthy skin”.

Clothes

Rooney has ditched the fleeces and cagoules for more tailored workwear, admitting he takes inspiration from Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino’s wardrobe. He told the BBC: “I love his clothes…it’s a shame I can’t get his hair, but I can get his clothes from somewhere.”

Personal stylist Manisha Sabharwal said: “Wayne Rooney’s transformation has been less about following trends and more about refinement. The biggest change I notice is in the fit and cut, making his overall silhouette sharper without looking overly styled.

“He’s also embraced a more sophisticated and timeless colour palette, of navy, black and grey which instantly elevates his looks. He has leaned into tonal dressing (wearing different shades and tones of the same colour from head to toe) which helps elongate the frame and creates an overall more understated and clean aesthetic.”

Sabharwal says: “His style evolution has brought a new confidence, authority and presence in his commentary. Proof that the way we dress can shape not only how others see us but how we see ourselves.”

And she’s right, something has to be said for the Rooney lifemaxxing going on – the improvements he’s made from the inside out and the start of a new career chapter. Delivering insightful commentary (and charmingly memeable punditry; the promise to row down the River Mersey upon Norway’s entry into the quarter-finals was perfect TV), Rooney has entered a new era of confidence.

And as he hits his fifth decade, his youthful visage really does belie the latter-day wisdom of the man within. And what says glow-up more than an inner glow?
