Nix is right on track to play in Week 1.
That much has been said, but also shown by his recent workout video. It’s a culmination of all the work he’s put in this offseason.
That, and the severity of the injury. Which, while it was an ankle fracture, wasn’t nearly as bad as say and ACL injury.
That’s what Patrick Mahomes sustained in mid-December in the loss to the Chargers. That, and an LCL tear.
According to Waterbury Hospital, part of UCONN Health, an expected timeline for an ACL injury return is 9-12 months. But that can be extended when a complication like an LCL tear is included.
“We see these injuries far more often than people realize,” Dr. Frederick Watson of Waterbury Hospital notes. “The biggest difference-maker is early evaluation and a personalized treatment plan.” Mahomes’ recovery highlights what matters most: prompt diagnosis, expert orthopedic care, and structured rehabilitation—whether the injury happens on a football field or during everyday activity.
He cautions that healing is on the timeline of the individual’s body, not the football schedule.
Of course, the Chiefs and their superstar quarterback want him to play in Week 1. But there’s certainly a question of whether or not he’ll be healthy by then.
Patrick Mahomes: “I don’t want to miss that game [against the Broncos]”
Hey, the Broncos and Chiefs are divisional rivals. And Kansas City got a wakeup call last year with the loss in the Mile High City when Mahomes was healthy. Then Denver beat the Chiefs again on Merry Nixmas.
The Broncos stole the division away from K.C. after an 8-year streak of winning it. Mahomes wants revenge.
“That’s my goal,” Mahomes said. “I’ve said that since the beginning is being ready to go Week 1. I can’t predict the future and I know that it’s a long process. It’s not just my decision, but at the same time I’m going to give the doctors and the coaches every single opportunity I can to let me be out there Week 1.
“I don’t want to miss that game [against the Broncos] because that’s the team that won the division while we were gone and you want to be out there and ready to go with your teammates. I’ll give every single thing I can to be out there Week 1 and hopefully the doctors and the coaches give me the green light and I’m able to go out there with my guys and compete against one of the best teams in the league.”
For Mahomes, it was the first time in his 9-year career he landed on the IR. That’s a bit nerve-racking for even the greatest of athletes. Plus, he is “over the hill” in football terms; he’ll be 31 this year. That’s not saying he can’t keep playing at a high level, but father time comes for everyone.
Both Nix and Mahomes are coming off their first major injuries of their respective careers.
If they go head-to-head in Kansas City on Monday Night Football in just about two months from now, it’ll be must-see TV.
If Mahomes is out, Denver will be the heavy favorite even with the game in Missouri.
