Bill Belichick and winning were synonymous during his legendary NFL coaching career, first as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants and then as the head coach of the New England Patriots.
He was part of 8 Super Bowl-winning teams, 2 as an assistant and 6 as a head coach. He had great players to get to all those Super Bowls, but the one constant during his NFL coaching career was his presence on the sidelines. If anyone knew how to build that winning culture, that lofty standard, that set of expectations, it was Belichick.
But life as a college football coach at North Carolina didn’t start out so well last season. That winning culture wasn’t established in Chapel Hill, for a variety of reasons, and the Tar Heels struggled to a 4-8 record that had many whispering about Belichick’s long-term future as a college coach.
On Friday afternoon at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte, Belichick was asked by a reporter about setting that standard in Year 2 at UNC and how he’ll make it hold up, step by step. He had his answer ready, because why wouldn’t he after doing all that winning in the NFL?
“I think you keep pushing them to higher ground, and when they reach that, then you raise the bar and go to a higher standard. That’s what training, that’s what progress is, in anything,” Belichick said. “Once you reach a certain level and you’re comfortable, and you can executive that and you have a good foundation, build the next floor. Keep building on that.”
Sometimes, it doesn’t all come together right away, as Belichick experienced last fall during that 4-win debut season.
“You can only go as fast as you can have good, solid construction. Sometimes, that’s faster or slower than you want it to be,” Bill Belichick said. “But it doesn’t matter. Once you have a good foundation, then you move up. That’s how I look at it.”
Belichick is used to coaching in the final game of the season of his sport, after winning all those Super Bowls in the NFL.
