ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A sulfuric acid spill at the Kodak facility ignited a hazmat response from the Rochester Fire Department Friday morning.

What happened

Fire crew tell us they got a call for a fire alarm around 2 a.m.. Once they got to the scene, they found three lead-acid batteries smoking and leaking sulfuric acid after the building’s emergency backup power system malfunctioned. Crews explain that chemical reaction created hydrogen gas, a major explosion hazard.

Fire crews started their hazmat response by using water-powered fans to get that hydrogen gas to a nearby balcony. Other crews worked to clean up the sulfuric acid spill.

Fire officials tell News10NBC they disconnected power to that battery charging system once explosion risks weren’t a concern.

None of the firefighter or Kodak employees were hurt.

Now, RFD says Kodak has an “on-site fire brigade” trained to maintain the backup power equipment. So that team will handle the cleanup from here.
