Wildfire smoke billowing into the Chicago area from fires burning in parts of Canada and northern Minnesota caused Chicago’s air quality to become the worst in the world of any major city on Thursday, according to data from IQAir that showed a composite air quality index (AQI) of 629 as of 9 p.m. — far into levels considered “hazardous” by experts.
Many outdoor camps and events to shifted indoors and pools and beaches were closed on Thursday as officials advised people to avoid breathing in the unhealthy air by spending the day inside or masking up if a trip outdoors is necessary.
The National Weather Service extended an ongoing air quality alert for most of the Chicago area that will run through at least Friday night. Illinois EPA also issued a “Red Forecast Air Pollution Action Day” for the area Thursday and into Friday.
The smoke is expected to be around for most of the day on Friday, however, southwestern winds could blow in during the afternoon hours and push the smoke out over Lake Michigan.
Isolated, scattered thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon on Friday, followed by a cold front starting Saturday afternoon and into Sunday.
Though the wildfire smoke is expected to move out of the area by the weekend, similar conditions could return next week as winds shift out of the north and bring cooler air and potentially more smoke to the region.
