BUFFALO, N.Y. — An employee of the Buffalo Public School system is accusing two high-ranking district members of sexual harassment that she says went on for months.
Antoinette Amos filed a notice of claim against the district, accusing former Superintendent Dr. Pascal Mubenga and Board of Education member Muki Hawkins. She says Mubenga kissed her and forced her to touch him in an inappropriate area without her consent.
Amos also says Hawkins made sexually suggestive remarks to her while in a car together. She says he later retaliated against her by spreading rumors and attempting to discredit her during board meetings.
Amos is seeking compensation for damages including emotional distress and injury to professional reputation. Her attorney says the district did nothing to curb a pattern of unacceptable behavior from both men, despite Amos reporting them to the district multiple times.
“These are not one-off instances. These are not interpersonal mistakes. This is a pattern of conduct,” said Kristen Elmore Garcia.
“She’s a strong individual who knows that this wasn’t right. And in order to take the steps necessary to prevent it from happening again, you got to stand up for your rights now,” Garcia said.
Mubenga resigned as superintendent earlier this week. Neither Mubenga nor board member Hawkins has publicly responded to the allegations.
The school district has 90 days to conduct a hearing, after which Amos can file a civil lawsuit.
