After nearly nine months, the city of La Mesa is closer to repairing a broken street light at Baltimore Drive and Lake Park Way, where a pedestrian was hit and killed while crossing the street last September. Some La Mesa residents have since urged the city to repair the broken street light since September 16, 2025, when the 61-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car while walking across an unmarked crosswalk just outside of the 7-11 shopping center.La Mesa police claimed the woman was not in a designated crosswalk at the time of the collision.According to complaints on a repair request platform obtained by Times of San Diego, residents urged the city to make pedestrian upgrades months after the fatal collision.“Another accident on Baltimore and Lake Park Way,” wrote one La Mesa resident to the city of La Mesa in February 2028. “Traffic calming requested again.”Two months later, another resident submitted a report on the intersection to the city.“This light has been gone since [August 5, 2025] when a woman was killed at this intersection,” reads a April 29, 2026, report from an unknown resident to the city of La Mesa. “This is an unmarked crossing that many people use for 7-11 and the shopping center. We have requested a new light several times. People speed coming south on Baltimore. It really needs a crosswalk or, better yet, a stop sign.”And while residents lobbied for more comprehensive pedestrian improvements at the intersection, city emails reveal staff were hitting roadblock after roadblock in repairing the streetlight. “The repair is more complicated than we initially thought,” Traffic Engineer Christina Valenti responded to a resident in an email complaint, obtained by Times of San Diego through a records request. In the email, Traffic Engineer Valenti said damage to the post was more extensive and was taking more time than initially thought.Times of San Diego reached out to the City of La Mesa in July, and the city said the replacement is underway and completion is expected in the first week of August. And while crews are awaiting the parts needed to repair the light and the post, city engineer Valenti tells Times of San Diego that it is studying the location to see what improvements, if any, need to be made.“Regarding the crosswalk, our engineering team is currently reviewing the intersection to evaluate pedestrian safety and determine whether additional improvements, including a crosswalk, are warranted.”
