ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Air quality reached the purple range on Thursday, which is very unhealthy, and closing your windows doesn’t keep that harmful air out of your home.

News10NBC found people running through the harmful haze hovering in the air and shrouding the skyline in a curtain of smoke. Scientists say that haze holds tiny toxic air particles that end up in the little air sacs through which oxygen is moved into your bloodstream.

“The smoke particles work their way through, and they slowly over time fill up and there’s no way of getting them out,” said Jim Wesley, a former toxicologist.

If you think you can escape that tiny particulate matter by going inside, think again. Wesley, a scientist and former toxicologist at Saint Mary, came to the News10NBC building armed with an air quality monitor around his neck.

“So right now we’re at 52 on what I can measure, which is the particles,” Wesley said.

That’s unhealthy for sensitive groups. At the time of the interview, the air quality outside was in the purple range, very unhealthy. But his monitor showed those tiny particles were affecting the air inside the News10NBC building.

Air purifiers effectively remove those tiny particles. Wesley uses a small battery-powered one in his car and a larger one for his house with three filters that catch three different kinds of air contaminants.

“And here’s your HEPA, and the HEPA takes out all the fine particles, and I change these about once a year,” Wesley said.

He said this one is designed to purify the air in a larger space, like your living room. A worthwhile investment, he said, because your home is your castle.

“Inside the castle, you have the absolute right and ability to control the indoor air quality and protect your family — keep your family healthy and safe,” Wesley said.

Air purifiers are also helpful if you have gas appliances, which can also release particulate matter.
