A thing I’ve learned about myself in recent years is that going to concerts or listening parties for artists your friends like (but aren’t in your rotation) are some of the best nights I’ve had. Going out solely for the vibes is the move.
Our countdown to the Chicago Bears’ Week 1 showdown against the Carolina Panthers continues:We are 5️⃣9️⃣ days from the Bears kicking off the 2026 regular season vs. the Panthers.Ron Rivera wore No. 59 for the Bears from 1984-92. — Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) July 16, 2026 We’re moving swiftly through this countdown. It feels like it was just yesterday when it was in the 90s. Gonna spend this Bullet remembering some guys who wore No. 59 for the Bears over the years. Players who come to mind are linebackers Danny Trevathan (2016-21), Rosevelt Colvin (1999-2002), Pisa Tinoisamoa (2009-10), and Joe Cain (1993-96). Using Pro Football Reference’s Approximate Value metric, linebacker Gary Campbell (who played for the Bears from 1977 to 1983) was the best player to wear the number for Chicago’s football team. In case you’re curious, defensive lineman Jamree Kromah has been assigned the number going into the 2026 season. Fun fact: We are just 30 days away from the Bears’ exhibition opener against the Cleveland Browns. On the one hand, I am not surpried to see the Bears on this list of teams who can’t afford a slow start…Top 5 teams who can't afford a slow start ⬇️ 1.) Green Bay Packers 2.) Cincinnati Bengals 3.) Kansas City Chiefs 4.) Chicago Bears 5.) Buffalo Bills What are your thoughts?@msmallmon pic.twitter.com/s2OY2mnJjJ
— UNSPORTSMANLIKE (@UnSportsESPN) July 16, 2026 … but on the other hand, we saw this team get off to a slow start, rebound, piece things together as the season moved along, and finish as the NFC North champs. This isn’t to say that I would like to see the Bears get into the habit of slow starts. That isn’t ideal. However, there are enough returning players (and coaches!) from last year’s team that showed so much mettle that a slow start wouldn’t totally spook me. I stand by my belief that the early-season bye week in 2025 was a godsend. Granted, this is something I thought when the schedule dropped last year. But still! That early off week (plus an extra day of prep because their return came on Monday Night Football) allowed the Bears to make some quick adjustments, lean into the things that were working, and pull the plug on some experiments that weren’t. Looking back, that this coaching staff was willing to make some tough decisions early and that the players responded positively should have been seen immediately as encouraging signs. For what it’s worth, I like where the bye week lands for the Bears this year. Not only is it in the middle of the season, it lands during the NFL Trade Deadline. In other words, should the Bears swing a trade that adds to this roster, they will be uniquely positioned to on-board a new guy without feeling the pressure of cramming everything into a short week. Yes, the Bears are on the list. We discussed the potential fit (and our history following the Clowney connection with Chicago on the summertime offseason rumor mill) on Wednesday. Joining the Bears here are divisional rivals in Green Bay and Detroit. Another team on the list, the Seattle Seahawks, are one of Chicago’s opponents on the schedule. If it isn’t the Bears that land Clowney, I’m hoping that it isn’t someone who they play this season. ESPN’s Katherine Terrell has details on the New Orleans Saints ironing out a new deal to keep running back Alvin Kamara with the team. Kamara was a Saints third-round pick (67th overall) in 2017 and has been one of the league’s most productive backs. The 2017 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year is a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time second-team All-Pro. He has never rushed for 1,000 yards, but he has eight seasons with at least 1,100 scrimmage yards. I’ll be curious to see how he pairs with Travis Etienne, who signed as a free agent. A fun read from ESPN’s Bill Connelly, who writes about what the College Football Playoff expansion could learn from the 2026 World Cup. I need to get around to checking out the Theo Epstein episode of the 2016 Cubs World Series reunion podcast. But in the meantime, Brett shared a highlight in a BN Cubs post in which Theo Epstein revealed how VERY differently the Game 7 rain delay could have played out. It’s the kind of thing that might’ve killed me had it actually happened. THEY DID IT! The Chicago Bulls picked up their first Summer League win! Caleb Wilson continues to look the part, which has me truly excited about basketball for the first time in a long time. Tab takes a look at who the Chicago Blackhawks will host in the 2026-27 home opener. I am not as excited about the Blackhawks … and probably won’t be until we get a healthy Connor Bedard in the mix.More Bears From Bleacher Nation: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
