It’s schedule release day for the Chicago Blackhawks (and the rest of the NHL)! Yesterday we learned the Blackhawks will appear in three other teams’ home openers before hosting the St. Louis Blues to open their 2026-27 home schedule.
Included in the NHL’s news regarding the slate of opening nights across the league was the announcement of dates for some of the league’s signature events, which includes the Hawks going full Griswold and taking a European vacation. The Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators will headline the 2026 NHL Global Series Germany with regular-season games on December 18 and December 20 at PSD Bank Dome in Düsseldorf.
We also got a first look at the logo for the 2027 NHL All-Star Game, which will be hosted by the Islanders. 2027 NHL All-Star Game I had multiple people send me a link in my DMs on Twitter yesterday/overnight to a podcast that said the Blackhawks should… wait for it… work on establishing an identity and “stop chasing the playoffs.” For an organization that’s been… telling us for 3-4 years… that the plan has been to develop their stockpile of prospects and let them establish their identity and not go for the quick fix and overspend to try to make the playoffs — to the exhausting chagrin of Blackhawks fans everywhere — I’m not sure I’ve seen the point get missed by that much. Because multiple people sent it to me I’ll throw a comment here. But… yeah. Where’s my facepalm emoji? As a reminder: tomorrow is Connor Bedard‘s 21st birthday. He signed his entry-level contract on — his 18th birthday. To paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield in Caddyshack, “We’re all gonna get paid!” — said NHL agents on Wednesday. The biggest name/dollars came a little later at night when the Flyers announced a four-year extension with forward Trevor Zegras that has a $9.125M cap hit. I guess if they had already (theoretically) committed $18M to Leo Carlsson, half of that for Zegras (a former Duck in his own right) isn’t too crazy? Maybe? Still, another sign that the money is going up a LOT this summer. When the dust settles, we’ll see how the books judge the Bowen Byram contract in this market. But there have been some surprisingly big numbers handed out by teams who are retaining their own guys.BREAKING: We have signed forward Trevor Zegras to a four-year contract extension worth an average annual value (AAV) of $9.125 million.
— Philadelphia Flyers (@NHLFlyers) July 16, 2026 Also getting paid on Wednesday: Cole Perfetti, who avoided arbitration and inked a five-year contract with a $6M AAV with the Winnipeg Jets. I like everything about this contract more than I like the Zegras deal. Free agent forward Anthony Mantha, whose name has become popular in the comments here recently, signed a two-year deal with the New Jersey Devils that has a $4.75M AAV. The Blackhawks would have needed to move someone out to make room for him, but I like that term/dollars combo for the player. Scott Maxwell at Daily Faceoff looked at five players in danger of a regression this coming season. One of them is… new New Jersey Devils forward Anthony Mantha. Another on his list: Bruins center Pavel Zacha, who is also making the rounds in the comments sections. Maybe there’s a reason guys aren’t targeted? 2026 NHL Draft The following 2026 NHL Draft picks signed entry-level contracts on Wednesday: Pick No. 5 — New York Rangers signed defenseman Alberts Smits 19 — Los Angeles Kings signed forward Elton Hermansson 28 — Anaheim Ducks signed forward Marcus Nordmark 29 — Vegas Golden Knights signed defenseman Juho Piiparinen 51 — Carolina Hurricanes signed defenseman William Håkansson Finally, the New Jersey Devils announced the completion of Sheldon Keefe’s coaching staff. They hired Ted Donato and AJ MacLean as assistant coaches, Leo Luongo as director of goaltending and Dan Stewart as a goaltending coach. Yes, that’s the father of Blackhawks forward Ryan Donato; Ted spent 22 seasons as the head coach at Harvard. The bench boss has his crew.
