What causes harmful algae blooms?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — For weeks, harmful algae blooms have been appearing on Conesus Lake, prompting the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to issue an advisory recommending avoiding all contact with the blooms.

News10NBC looked into what causes these blooms, which pop up on local lakes nearly every summer.

The DEC said it’s a combination of factors. A lot of sun, plus warm and calm water, helps the blooms thrive. The more nutrients they have — like phosphorus and nitrogen — the more likely they are to appear. The presence of a certain kind of mussel can affect it, as well wind direction.

This map on the DEC’s website shows both current and archived sightings of harmful algae. People can add pictures of the blooms on local lakes. There are a handful of active reports on Long Pond, several on Honeoye Lake and on Cayuga Lake, to name a few.

If you see harmful algae on the water, steer clear of that area. Harmful algae blooms are different from the invasive water chestnut that has been choking local waterways, though both can create serious problems.
