HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Henrietta leaders are considering permanent zoning changes for any projects to build large-scale data centers in the town.
This comes after Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a bill that pauses the construction of large-scale data centers for up to a year, creating the nation’s first data center moratorium.

In an email, Henrietta Town Supervisor Stephen Schultz said the moratorium gives the town time to create laws to address any issues data centers may cause. As News10NBC has covered, data centers have raised criticism because they require massive amounts of energy to power thousands of computer servers, and large amounts of water to keep the computers cool. Schultz said he’s not against data centers, but wants them to be built sustainably.
“We want to be proactive, not reactive. We are not against data centers as a rule — we are against the problems they create,” Schultz said. “What our proposed law does is allow large-scale data centers only in areas where they can be supported and that they are built in a more sustainable way and/or that improves the infrastructure such that they leave the Town in a better situation after they are built as compared to before they were built.”

Schultz said data centers could provide some benefits to the town, such as providing taxes. Since most data centers have values between $100 million and $5 billion, that could be enough to drop every Henrietta resident’s taxes by 1.5% or more.
