Futures finalist Alexandra Sartie Barrutia, a freestyle specialist from Mexico, has announced her verbal commitment to swim for the University of Arizona beginning in the fall of 2027.

I want to thank my family, my coach and everyone that has been involved in my swimming life for helping make this opportunity possible. This is an important milestone in my life and I’m very excited to take the next steps. Bear Down!!”
A rising high school senior, Barrutia is based in Tijuana, Mexico, where she currently trains with Club Acuatico De Alto Nivel and excels at free and back. She also represents the Sea to Desert Swim Association in San Diego, California.
At the CAST Presidents’ Day Senior meet (SCY) back in February, Barrutia turned in a series of top performances. She won the 100 free (50.57 – PB) and took 2nd in the 200 free (1:48.54 – PB), 3rd in the 500 free (4:51.20 – PB) and 200 back (2:01.50 – PB) and 5th in the 50 back (26.79 – PB) and 50 free (23.86 – SB). She also contested the 100 back (57.71).
Barrutia represented Club Acuatico De Alto Nivel at the Arena Elite Championships (LCM) a few months later, clocking another series of fast swims. She won the girls’ 17-18 age group in the 50 free (27.33 – SB) and 100 free (57.97 – PB), and she placed 2nd in her age group in the 200 free (2:05.88 – PB) and 50 back (31.56 – PB).
Barrutia competed at the 2025 Futures Championships (LCM) in Sacramento last summer, where she earned a second swim in one event. She placed 22nd in the 200 back (2:24.56) and contested the 100 free (1:00.41), 400 free (4:36.93), 800 free (9:22.73), 50 back (31.98) and 100 back (1:07.89.

The Wildcats sent four athletes to compete at the NCAA Division I Women’s Championship, where they finished 29th overall. Based on the results from the 2026 Big 12 Conference Championships, Barrutia would have landed in the ‘B’ final in 500 free and the ‘C’ final in the 200 free, setting her up to score some points early on for Arizona.
The list of recruits set to join Barrutia in Tucson currently includes Dylon Flikkema, Kendall Jollands and Lexi Tippie, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
