Poor air quality in Chicago area continues, and wildfire smoke could make things even worse ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

An air quality alert for parts of the Chicago area continue Wednesday and could even be extended into Thursday thanks to wildfire smoke from a cluster of fires in Canada.

A map of the wildfire smoke Wednesday morning showed wildfires across northern Ontario and even parts of northern Minnesota, with a plume of heavy smoke hovering over northern parts of Wisconsin and Michigan.

“Smoke is getting trapped by the jetstream,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said Wednesday, “and that pushes it down to the surface. That’s when we could see some smoky, hazy conditions, but not until tonight.”

About 9 p.m., the smoke could impact counties to the far north and clip the northern sections of Cook County.

“If you live in LaSalle County, you may not even see the effects of this at all,” Roman said.

The wildfire smoke forecast comes as an air quality alert continues for another day for much of the Chicago area, with poor air quality primarily due to unhealthy ozone levels and hot, humid temperatures. While the alert is set to expire at midnight, it could be extended if smoke levels as the surface level increase.

“With the heat, we already have air quality alerts for ozone that could worsen with wildfire smoke the rest of the week,” NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes explained.

According to air quality tracking website AirNow.gov, air quality in parts of Illinois and northwest Indiana Wednesday are expected to hit the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category, which ranks of level two of five.

The National Weather Service advised children, teens, older adults and people with asthma to reduce their exposure outside and watch for symptoms of coughing or shortness of breath.

An Air Pollution Action Day and Air Quality Action Day were both declared for Wednesday by environmental agencies in Illinois and Indiana, with officials asking people to reduce pollution levels in a number of ways like avoiding drive-thrus and not filling up with gas until after 7 p.m.

Temperatures Wednesday will remain in the 90s, with heat index levels between 100 and 105 degrees. The next chances for rain come Thursday, with additional chances Friday and Saturday.
