England’s crunch World Cup semi-final clash against Argentina will take place at the expected kick-off time, despite warnings of severe weather.
The Three Lions are scheduled to go up against Lionel Messi’s world champions in the US city of Atlanta at 8pm UK time on Wednesday night.
There were concerns about a potential delay due to the weather, with thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast to hit the city.
However, a spokesperson for the Mercedes-Benz Stadium has confirmed that the venue’s retractable roof means any wild weather will not affect the scheduled kick-off time.
“Since the stadium is covered, the match is not weather-dependent so it will be played as scheduled,” a stadium spokesperson said.
“No, it won’t be delayed, the game will start as planned regardless of weather.”
Gates open early
The stadium spokesperson said officials would try to get England and Argentina fans inside as early as possible if bad weather is detected in the hours before kick-off. The gates will be opened three hours before the game starts at 3pm local time.
“We will do everything we can to ensure the safety of fans – but it won’t delay the start of the game if fans are still entering the stadium or are delayed entering due to weather conditions,” they said.
England’s last 16 thriller against Mexico was delayed by one hour – keeping fans at home up until 4am to see Thomas Tuchel’s team win 3-2. But the Azteca Stadium did not have a retractable roof.
Wednesday’s weather forecast for Atlanta is warm and humid, with temperatures of 29°C. But the stadium is fully air-conditioned, so the players should remain relatively cool.
Thousands of England supporters have descended on Atlanta ahead of Wednesday’s huge semi-final against arch rivals Argentina.
Three Lions supporters have said it is time for “revenge for the Hand of God” – so long as Argentina captain and talisman Messi can be stopped.
Tuchel said his side were ready to face an Argentina team “fuelled by history” as they bid to reach a first men’s World Cup final since 1966.
He told reporters on Tuesday that much of the challenge would be preventing Messi from producing another moment of brilliance.
‘Just stop Messi’
Mark Lester, 56, a supporter from London, said: “Just stop Messi. I know they’ve got other people, but they haven’t got other people really.”
Simon Rowlinson, 61, from Wolverhampton, said he wanted “revenge” for Diego Maradona’s goal for Argentina against England in 1986.
“It’s our time for getting revenge for the Hand of God and everything else,” he said.
Pubs across England are expecting to sell six million extra pints on Wednesday night as fans flock to watch the big game.
Landlords would expect to sell eight million pints on an average Wednesday in July, so the extra six million equates to a 75 per cent increase, said the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).
It will be a “bigger boost than we’d normally see on a bank holiday or New Year’s Eve”, said BBPS chief executive Emma McClarkin.
This comes despite half (47 per cent) of those tuning into the World Cup saying they are watching more matches at home than they normally would, due to late kick-off times, a survey for Barclays bank found.
