A 15-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy were both arrested after seven members of a family were shot — five fatally — in southern Illinois over the weekend, authorities announced on Tuesday.

ISP said a 15-year-old girl, who was not named, and 16-year-old Ja’ymier Davis were both arrested and are facing charges in connection to the killings, including several counts of first-degree murder and other felonies.

The seven people who were shot were all members of the same family from East St. Louis and related to the 15-year-old girl who is facing charges, Illinois State Police said. The shootings occurred around East St. Louis at multiple locations.

On Sunday, human remains of three people were found by ISP at the Samuel Gompers Homes on the 400 block of North 6th Street, authorities said. ISP then requested assistance from their Public Safety Enforcement Group unit, and four other victims were identified by investigators. One person was fatally shot at 39th and Summit streets, and one person was killed and two others injured at Jones Park.

Authorities said the two teens were taken into custody that day after ISP officers topped a vehicle one of the suspects was driving.

The people killed in the shootings were identified by authorities as the following individuals:

49-year-old Cherie L. May 25-year-old Shania W. Thompson 24-year-old Devin May 21-year-old Quentin L. Thompson 74-year-old Patricia A. May

Details on what led up to the shooting weren’t immediately available.

St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the following charges on Tuesday:

Five counts of first-degree murder, Two counts of attempted first-degree murder, Two counts of aggravated battery, One count of aggravated vehicular hijacking, One count of dismembering a human body, One count of unlawful use of a stolen firearm

Davis was named by authorities because he is charged as an adult, however, authorities have not yet requested to transfer the girl’s juvenile case to adult criminal court. ISP said the St. Clair County State’s Attorney will do so “in the near future.”

Speaking at a news conference on Sunday, Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly emphasized there is no threat to the public.

“I just want to say these alleged acts, horrific violence taking this number of lives here in this community, it’s terrible,” he said. “It’s evil, but it will not keep this city down…”

No additional information was immediately available.
