ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An early morning car theft led to a police chase that ended in a crash and an arrest.

Rochester police got a report of a stolen car on Ames Street around 1 a.m. Officers tried to stop the stolen car on Plymouth Avenue, but the driver didn’t pull over and a chase began. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with the person whose car was stolen near where the crash happened on Warner Street.

Saturn Fruhling’s car is at the RPD impound lot because of the damage. Fruhling worries they won’t be able to get to work or take care of their three kids who all have disabilities without the car.

“I have a one year old and he is a child who has motor difficulties. They think he may have cerebral palsy. He’s the sweetest little boy and he was supposed to start early intervention services and, oh, I don’t know how I’m going to get him there,” Fruhling said.

Fruhling doesn’t know when they’ll be able to get their car back or pay to get it fixed. One of the women Fruhling was driving before the theft told them it looked like they’d been sideswiped, so Fruhling got out to check on the car.

“Before I’m able to get back in my car, her and another girl that was there jumped me and the male, the gentleman that was with them that was caught, got in the driver’s seat and sped off with my vehicle,” Fruhling said.

Fruhling says they threw their phone from the car and they’re still trying to replace it. As the car drove off, Fruhling says their thoughts were with their kids.

“That car driving off with my kids car seat in the trunk, like you could see it through the back window and I’m just sitting there like, how am I going to get the, how am I going to tell their grandma I’m not coming because they’re going to worry,” Fruhling said.

While this was happening, Fruhling’s kids were at a family member’s house. Fruhling was two hours late picking them up.

Without a phone, they haven’t been able to call their kids’ daycare yet.

“I have to be in regular contact with a lot of people who are involved with their care and it’s, it’s, it’s like as a mom with three disabled kids with no connection to anybody, it can be suffocating,” Fruhling said.

Fruhling wasn’t able to get to work or get their kids to daycare. RPD says a 20-year-old man is charged with robbery and grand larceny for the theft. The investigation is ongoing for additional suspects.
