CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — A man accused of shooting a woman in Canandaigua in June has pleaded not guilty.

Wayne Spencer pleaded not guilty Tuesday to assault, attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon. Canandaigua Police say Spencer shot a 67-year-old woman in the torso on Center Street in Canandaigua on June 24. She was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital in critical condition.
Police say Spencer had fled the scene, but Ontario County Sheriff’s deputies saw the car he was driving on 5 and 20 entering the Town of Geneva and tried to do a traffic stop. The vehicle drove off, and was pursued by the Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and the Geneva Police Department as the chase entered the City of Geneva.
Eventually, police say Spencer hit a utility pole and parked car on Milton Street, got out and ran off, then was caught after a short foot chase. Police say a loaded gun was found in the car.
According to police, Spencer has several felony convictions, including an attempted murder conviction in 2015 in Rochester.
