New Chicago Fire star Robert Lewandowski met the media Tuesday ahead of his debut with the club, with head coach Gregg Berhalter heralding his signing as a “historic day” for the organization.
Lewandowski, who signed with the Fire earlier this year after more than a decade of success with Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona in Europe, is hoping to bring more championship glory to Chicago, with the team currently locked in a battle for the top spot in the MLS’ Eastern Conference.
“I see the potential to win titles with this new club,” Lewandowski said. “And I’m very, very happy because it’s a new step in my career, a new step in my life.”
Lewandowski joins a Fire club that currently sits third in the Eastern Conference and is pursuing their first MLS Cup title since their debut season in 1998.
Berhalter praised Lewandowski has a difference-making scorer whose successes in Europe will undoubtedly help inspire his new teammates and to give the team additional scoring punch as they try to move forward as a club.
“This is an historic day not only for the Chicago Fire FC, but for the city of Chicago and MLS as a whole,” he said.
In all, Lewandowski has been a part of 14 domestic league champions during his career, including in 11 of the last 12 seasons as he captured Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and then three La Liga titles with Barcelona.
He has scored 427 career goals in domestic league games, including 14 in 31 La Liga games with Barcelona during the 2025-26 season.
He told reporters it was a “difficult decision” to leave Europe and to sign with an American team, but he called the opportunity a “nice, beautiful chapter in our lives.”
“It’s not easy to move from Europe to the USA, but on the other side, we are very excited,” he said.
Chicago’s massive Polish population will undoubtedly help Lewandowski’s profile soar in the city, and he said he’s already been welcomed into town warmly by local residents.
“The connection between the USA and Chicago and Poland is very, very important, and I’m appreciated a lot,” he said. “I already saw a lot of warm welcome from the people, on the street, and that makes me even more happy.”
Lewandowski joins a list of the most prominent international stars to ever join the Fire, a list that includes Bastian Schweinsteiger. He said he spoke to Schweinsteiger about playing in Chicago, and he also asked his former Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Muller, who now plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps, about the city and the league.
“They told me that it’s amazing,” he said.
The Fire will be back in action on Thursday as they take on the Whitecaps at Soldier Field.
