ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Scammers are now using artificial intelligence so frequently that experts warn you can no longer trust what you see and hear.
Ashley Upkins, president of the National Bar Association, said AI is now the primary tool of scammers.
“Right now we’re moving from an era when seeing was believing to one where verification is believing,” Upkins said.
News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry asked Adaptive Security, a cybersecurity firm, to create a deepfake using only a picture. The result was realistic, down to mannerisms.
How it works
AI tools are cheap and accessible. One of the most frequent fakes is voice cloning.
“The criminal only needs a few seconds of someone’s voice either taken from a phone call or even social media. So imagine getting a call where someone sounds exactly like your child or your parent,” Upkins said.
The scammer then pretends to be in a desperate situation and needs cash immediately. Or the scammer sounds like your boss and needs you to wire funds.
What to lookout for
Warning signs include urgent requests.
“Wire money immediately. Don’t tell anyone. This is confidential. What I’d like to tell people is slow down,” Upkins said.
The thieves want you to act quickly without thinking. Another common scam is cloned retail sites.
While investigating a story, I recently found a fake Apple site. The domain was not apple.com but amplifyapp.com. To verify it was a fake, the URL was copied and pasted on sucuri.net, a free website security checker. The site was immediately flagged as blacklisted, meaning web browsers or search engines have marked it as harmful.
Another site is Resemble AI Detect, which detects audio and video cloning.
To avoid falling victim, every family should have a safe word only family members know. Upkins stressed you can’t even trust the image on your video calls, as thieves are now using deepfakes on video calls to gain the trust of the victim.
