EAST ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An East Rochester police clerk gave one of the department’s sergeants a life-saving gift.
Sgt. Noah Fast has been a police officer in East Rochester for decades, “I actually went through the academy through the Sheriff’s department in 2002 and then about 2005, I decided to join the army reserves,” he recalls. But it was during the physical process for that, when he learned he had just one kidney.
For years, it wasn’t a problem but then his single kidney stopped functioning properly, so he was put on the transplant list. “With my blood type it was probably going to be about 7 years, the average is about 5 years but when they put you on the list, you probably only have about 2 to 3 years before you’re going to end up having to go on dialysis,” Sgt. Fast says.
East Rochester Police Clerk Tammy Jo Elliott had heard rumblings of Sgt. Fast’s health situation. “He was open to other officers and I would hear bits and pieces but Noah is not a complainer so, you never really knew unless I heard it from other people, “oh ya know… his numbers are getting bad, he might need dialysis soon,” I’m like… what?” Elliott says.
So, one day last fall, she made an offer: “Noah was in my office one day and was talking about it with somebody and I kind of made the remark, if you get in dire straits or whatever, let me know, I’m O- (blood type) so I would test for you,” she recalls.
Sgt. Fast wasn’t sure if Elliott had offered in jest but he did give her a number to call. “I was hoping she would be a match obviously and that she was serious about it but it’s honestly kind of an awkward thing to ask somebody,” he says.
The two carried on with their police duties for months while Elliott slipped out for doctors’ appointments. “Eventually, he says they found somebody as a match and I said, just so you know… that’s me, a couple more tests and we should be good to go,” Elliott recalls.
In late May, Elliott became more than just a friend and co-worker to Sgt. Fast. She gave him a kidney and the chance to continue a career that he loves. “It’s pretty amazing, I can’t be any more grateful than I am,” Fast says.
Elliott is pretty humble about the whole thing. “Why not, if it can save somebody’s life or give them a better quality of life… you only need one kidney to live so she just thought it was a no brainer,” she says.
An act of selflessness that changed Sgt. Noah Fast’s life forever.
Elliott was asked to be the honorary marshal for this year’s East Rochester Fireman’s Parade which will be held Saturday, July 25.
