Surf City Allstars ride into Point Loma Park

The band is still releasing great records, most recently, Step Up, but fans can rest assured, Tower of Power’s influential hits, such as “What Is Hip?” will make up the bulk of the set.

There will be two shows, set to feature songs from the likes of Aretha Franklin, Debbie Harry and Diana Ross, with the night’s singers being backed by a 9-piece band that includes guitarist Aaron Lind and percussionist Monette Marino. Fans of any of the listed artists will love these spirited performances and recast versions of classic songs.

Backed by Luke Little (bass), Tyler Kreutel (drums), Josh Moore (guitar), and Brian Levy (tenor sax), White’s virtuoso interpretations of these evergreen tunes will have jazz fans hanging on every note.

Pacific Records Fest takes place on July 19 at Kate Sessions Park, as part of the annual Concert on the Green music series. On hand will be three of the area’s most popular bands and a pair of newcomers, all signed to local music label Pacific Records and all with new releases just out. The festival will include headliners rock/reggae group Sandollar, celebrating their new album, “Sunny Day,” surf rockers The Tourmaliners, who are releasing a new single, “El Gato,” this week, and Island-themed trio Slack Key Ohana, who also just issued a new single, “Mai Tai’s in Paradise.” Meanwhile, Americana combo Twilight Highway will be playing their third gig ever, in support of their new self-titled album, with a set from VB by the Sea rounding out the afternoon. With short sets from each artist, this free event is a great way to take in a cross-section of some of San Diego’s finest up-and-coming new artists.

Fab Four fans won’t want to miss Beatles tribute band, Abbey Road, who perform a free show at Scripps Park on July 19, as part of the Concerts by the Sea series. Abbey Road turns in solid renditions of the hits, changing costumes to represent the Beatles’ various musical eras, 1964 to 1970. It’s hard to go wrong with an afternoon of Beatles tunes. Sing-alongs are sure to be the order of the day, with a set list built around classics such as “I Want To Hold Your Hand,” “Hey Jude,” and “Here Comes The Sun.”

A beloved perennial presence at area concerts, across genres, on July 19, Winston’s will honor Nguyen with an afternoon of punk rock ‘n’ roll, dubbed “Viet Fest.” Performing that afternoon will be Texaco Club, Wookalars, Strega 13, Hamapple, and Jon Cougar Concentration Camp, for a concert that’s going to be loud, boisterous fun, with the guest of honor sure to be stage side most of the show.

Mixing progressive rock and pop, Ambrosia’s string of hits in the 1970s and early 1980s still holds up today. Performing at the Belly Up Tavern on July 22, the band features original singer and bassist Joe Puerta as well as drummer Burleigh Drummond, and still sounds great, particularly on their signature lush harmonies. Ambrosia hasn’t released a new album since 1982, so fans on this tour are being treated to a greatest hits set sure to include “Holding On To Yesterday,” “Magical Mystery Tour” and “Biggest Part of Me,” plus a few choice covers.

On July 23, blues promoter RosaLea Schiavone celebrates her birthday with a party at Humphreys Backstage Live. The night features two of the best dance bands in San Diego, cumbia-billy favorites The Sleepwalkers, and the Queen of boogie woogie piano, Sue Palmer. Schiavone is one of the linchpins of the San Diego music community and has been supporting blues musicians for over a decade. This is a wonderful opportunity to say “thanks” while taking in some great music.
