‘We Still Got Work to Do’: Gavin Gallaher Confirms Return to UNC Baseball for 2027 Season ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

Gavin Gallaher is back.

The UNC baseball co-captain confirmed his return to the Diamond Heels Tuesday after not being selected in the 2026 MLB Draft. Gallaher is a rising senior and, thanks to the NCAA’s new 5-in-5 rule for student-athletes, will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Tar Heel Nation, we still got work to do…

I’m extremely excited to be returning to UNC. After a lot of thought and prayer, I know exactly where I am meant to be. God is good! #goheels ? pic.twitter.com/Aoh816QTQO

A starter in each of his first three seasons in Chapel Hill, Gallaher played major roles on the UNC teams which reached the Men’s College World Series in 2024 and 2026. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 Chapel Hill Regional after hitting a walk-off grand slam in the opening game against Long Island, then hitting a critical double to spark a ninth-inning rally against defending national champion LSU in the regional final. He was named to the ACC’s All-Freshman team and a second team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game.

In 2025, Gallaher again caught fire in the postseason by batting .722 in the Chapel Hill Regional and earning another Most Outstanding Player honor. His three home runs were the most by a Diamond Heel player in a single regional since 2006.

Though Gallaher’s overall hitting numbers dipped in 2026, he remained a critical piece of the UNC lineup. He lived up to his “Mr. June” moniker once again, recording a hit in all 12 of Carolina’s postseason games. In two games against West Virginia at the College World Series, Gallaher batted 5-for-10 with six runs batted in and four runs scored, including a go-ahead, two-RBI triple in the seventh inning of the first matchup with the Mountaineers. He finished the season with 12 home runs and 64 runs batted in and was one of three Diamond Heels to play in and start all 69 of the team’s games.

Gallaher also made headlines for his defense in 2026. After playing out of position at third base as a freshman and sophomore, he returned to the middle infield by playing second base as a junior. He finished the season with only five fielding errors in 319 chances, helping to anchor a UNC defense which ranked in the nation’s top 10 in fielding percentage and led all Division 1 teams in double plays. In June, Gallaher became just the second Diamond Heel ever to be named a Rawlings Gold Glove winner, honoring him as the best defensive second baseman in the country.

UNC assistant and first base coach Scott Jackson shared his excitement over Gallaher’s return on his own social media page, saying, “Somebody pinch me.”

Gallaher was among several notable Diamond Heels who did not hear their names called during the MLB Draft. First baseman Erik Paulsen and third baseman Cooper Nicholson also went undrafted. Both Paulsen and Nicholson have collegiate eligibility remaining.
