After the sacking/stepping down of Brendon McCullum as England Test coach, a new question has arisen, who will be their next coach? As per various reports it is a tight race between Andy Flower, Jonathan Trott, with India’s Rahul Dravid being the dark horse. Flower, for now is being considered the front-runner, who also happens to be the head coach of RCB in IPL. Talking about his chances, the franchises’ batting coach Dinesh Karthik has subtly ruled out the possibility of that happening.
Andy Flower frontrunner, but might not take up England job
Talking on SkySports’ Cricket Podcast, Dinesh Kartik made it clear, that juggling between RCB and England duties could be very difficult for Flower, and comes with its own set of challenges. “I genuinely doubt.. he’ll be a great candidate, should definitely one of the candidates to be thought of, but I would be very surprised if he took it, considering where England are,” Karthik said.
Although the batting coach did not reveal, what the RCB’s take is on the entire issue, he continued saying, that it could be tough for the veteran coach to manage things in England and in India. “He does a lot of leagues, and I’m sure he didn’t have the time. I read an article saying, England would be happy to accommodate IPL and rest of Test cricket, but with the schedule being the way it is… like when Jacob Bethell didn’t come for the first Test, Jofra Archer not being available, obviously kicked up a fuss.
Dinesh Karthik reveals the reason
“Andy Flower, with obviously having a pre-signed contract with RCB, which would mean, he would miss parts of all those. Will it be okay for England in preparation for Ashes, if they don’t have a coach for a Test or two. I hear there is an England Test against Bangladesh in May next year, and if Flower is doing RCB, it would be a challenge as well. Is he good, yes he is probably the best in the world, if not the best. Does he have the time? I’ll be very surprised if the answer is a yes.”
It is important to note that Flower is the very same coach who ended RCB’s title jinx in 2025, leading them to the trophy. On the flipside, even Bengaluru would not be keen to let him go, or divide his attention to other team, while still working for them. In 2026 too, he took them to the title, which is a great feat for a coach.
