Another heat wave will hit the Chicago area this week, but this one will be different than before.
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said temperatures Monday and lasting through the entire work week will be in the 80s and 90s. Dew point temperatures however, Roman said, won’t make things feel as sweltering as they did at the end of June.
“The heat index will make our ‘feels like temperature’ still feel a couple degrees hotter,” Roman said. “What’s missing is that extreme moisture.”
In June, high temperatures in the 90s accompanied by dew points in the upper 70s made temperatures feel as hot as 110 degrees or even 115 degrees at times, leading the National Weather Service to issue a days-long extreme heat warning.
With this heat wave, the dew points won’t be as high, Roman said, with temperatures expected to feel closer to the low 100s or even upper 90s.
“Dew points will stay in the 60s,” Roman said, making for sticky and muggy conditions. “Remember last time we stepped into the heat wave, dew points were in the 70s,” which made the humidity feel miserable or even sweltering.
Temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 80s and to upper 90s all week, Roman said. Monday will feel closer to 99 degrees, with heat index values between 100 and 104 as the week goes on.
“Last time, we were up to 115,” Roman said. “A little bit of a difference this time around.”
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said the hottest days with the highest humidity look to be Tuesday and Wednesday.
“This kind of heat is typical for this time of year,” the NWS said in a post on social media.
Dry conditions and mostly sunny skies were expected all week thanks to a ridge of high pressure, Roman said.
