Mr. Charlie’s, a plant-based restaurant, is hosting a grand opening party on July 11 from 1 pm to 5 pm.
The grand opening kicks off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, city representatives and members of the Mr. Charlie’s Team, according to the restaurant’s Instagram account.
Drew Walker is the general manager for Mr. Charlie’s Hillcrest location. Walker tells Times of San Diego that customers who line up by 2 pm will receive free plant-based burgers and chicken sandwiches. Walker also says that there will be a DJ and a tattoo artist at the event.
Mr. Charlie’s menu includes a Mr. Frowny’s meal with a choice of a “Not Burger”, fries and a drink; “Not Chicken Nuggets”; and a plant-based ice cream called “Mr. FluffHead.”
Mr. Charlie’s officially opened up in Hillcrest three weeks ago, on June 15. There are five Mr. Charlie’s locations across California and one in Sydney, Australia.
The Hillcrest restaurant is the second to open in San Diego. The Pacific Beach location opened on February 7.
Walker said that she has been a part of many restaurant openings, but she has never seen this big of a turnout.
“We’ve been open for three weeks, and I already have regulars,” Walker said.
Walker said that she hopes Mr. Charlie’s will become one with the community of Hillcrest.
“We’re right at a really important, pivotal corner in the community,” Walker said. “Hopefully, we evoke the same energy that the rest of the businesses around us display.”
Plant-based, vegetarian and vegan restaurants are expensive, says Walker, so the deals that Mr. Charlie’s has, like a buy-one-get-one Mr. Frowny’s meal or a family pack that feeds a family of four for under $40, are the restaurant’s greatest strengths.
“It really opens up a whole other side of people that maybe wouldn’t normally try plant-based food,” Walker said.
