A Chicago baseball team’s fanbase is tied for first across Major League Baseball for “heavy in-game drinking” according to a new study.
The study by the Action Network analyzed survey responses from nearly 3,500 baseball fans across the county to find out how much they eat and drink before and during games.
Though fans of the Chicago White Sox tied with supporters of the Washington Nationals when it comes to drinking the most during games, White Sox fans took home a win in the category of “heavy in-game drinking,” the study found.
The survey responses suggest the average patron at a Chicago White Sox and Washington Nationals game consumes roughly 2.5 drinks each throughout the game. However, 18.5% of White Sox fans reported consuming five or more drinks — the highest rate of heavy drinking reported across the MLB.
Across the whole league, fans average 1.9 drinks during a game, one drink before a game and 1.6 hot dogs throughout the game.
Fans of the Chicago Cubs weren’t too far behind their South Side rivals when it comes to enjoying a beverage at the ballpark.
Ranking sixth overall, fans of the Cubs consume 2.2 drinks during the game on average, though only 11.4% reported typically having more than five drinks.
