A suburban man has been charged with first degree murder in connection with a fatal shooting Tuesday inside a Mundelein apartment that left a 48-year-old man killed and a 47-year-old woman injured.
Deandre Y. Harris, 21, of South Holland, was charged with two counts first degree murder and aggravated battery in the shooting, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.
The shooting took place about 11:40 a.m. at an apartment in the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive. According to the sheriff’s office, the apartment is where Harris’ girlfriend, 19, lives, along with a 48-year-old man and the man’s 47-year-old girlfriend.
Investigators say Harris was visiting his girlfriend at the apartment when he got into an argument with the man. During the argument, Harris took out a semi-automatic pistol and began shooting, striking the man multiple several times.
The 47-year-old woman was also struck by gunfire, the sheriff’s office said.
When Mundelein Police arrived, they found both victims inside. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The man was also transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Following the shooting, Mundelein Police Officers obtained a description of a suspect vehicle and broadcast the information to law enforcement agencies throughout the region. Illinois State Police located the vehicle on an interstate near the Indiana border, conducted a traffic stop, and took Harris and an adult woman into custody.
According to officials, a gun was found in Harris’ vehicle.
The incident was described by investigators as “targeted, domestic-related incident.” According to the Sheriff’s office, Harris was set to make his first court appearance Wednesday, with the state’s attorney’s office filing a petition to detain Harris while he awaits trial.
