Cubs Injury Updates: Taillon, Cabrera, Palencia, Brown, Shaw ...Middle East

As always, a number of Chicago Cubs injuries to update …

The plan right now is for Jameson Taillon (hamstring) to make another rehab start before returning to the big league team, but Craig Counsell said he was available on a limited basis if something should happen this week that requires his return before the break. Barring that, it’s another rehab start, and then he should be good to return after the All-Star break if it goes smoothly.

Meanwhile, Edward Cabrera (hamstring/adductor) had a good day of throwing and running, and that continues to be the plan for him this week. There is no specific date mentioned for his return to mound work, but you could imagine the Cubs hoping he could do that in another week or so. With a rehab assignment in the second half of the month, you could be looking – optimistically – at a return at the end of the month or in early August. That timeline is notable, because the Trade Deadline is August 3. All else equal, I’m sure the Cubs would love to have him back and having made a start before that date (for information, most of all, but also for just a tiny bit of leverage).

Daniel Palencia is symptom-free on his flexor strain, says Counsell, and he could be back up on the mound after the All-Star break. So, he is also someone you’d be hoping for a possible return at the end of the month or early-August.

Per the Tribune, Ben Brown stayed back in Chicago to keep slowly ramping things up. It’s basically a matter of slowly adding things back in (he’s been throwing plyo balls to keep his arm moving) and seeing how the stress reaction in the neck responds. Eventually he’ll get new imaging to see if the stress fracture is healing, but a lot of it early on is going to be guided by how Brown feels. There’s not really much of a projectable timetable here.

As for Matt Shaw’s left hand/wrist, unfortunately he still felt the issue when trying to swing this past weekend (Tribune), so he’s back to resting for four or five days before trying again.
