Jesus Christ Superstar review: Take a bow Sam Ryder, you've just given us the show of the year ...Middle East

News by : (Radio Times) -

As a musical, Jesus Christ Superstar's power surely comes from the ability to fit into any era, shrugging off one style for the next, and relying on the universal appeal of its score, not to mention the literal eternity of its source material. The Tim Minchin version for instance was peak 2010s, employing a battered steam-punk set, triangle scarves and thick under-eye liner to fit into the inherent grunginess of that era. Meanwhile, this production is steeped in the weird, the meta and the uncanny that comes across so often in our post-Black Mirror world.

From the off, this show has a wonderfully eerie feel to it. The ensemble are in constant flow with every movement carrying a deeper meaning thanks to incredible choreography from Drew Mconie. Instead of the expected group of rabble rousing supporters, their devotion to Jesus comes across as stranger and far more disturbing. Hamilton fans in particular will enjoy Charley Warburton's character of Mob Leader who reminds me of Ariana DeBose's The Bullet, throughout the show she seems to represent a higher power, pulling everyone forward to their inevitable fate and whipping up the crowd's zealotry.

To be candid, it is often easy as a reviewer to pick out the standout figures on stage, but when it comes to this production it’s nigh on impossible. Every single member of the principal cast was exceptional: David Thaxton's Pilate made me cry, Desdemona Cathabel's Mary Magdalene took my breathe away, Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Herod made me laugh and Matty J and Bob Harms as Annas and Caiaphas were the funkiest Romans I’d ever seen.

Lastly Sam Ryder. If his version of Gesthemane wowed you at the Big Night of Musicals, just wait for this. In all my theatre visits I have never actually seen a standing ovation after a single song, but boy, is it deserved. All I can say is I hope this is just the start of his musical career.
