Firefighters worked Tuesday to subdue a brush fire that has blackened hundreds of acres and forced evacuations of military facilities on the grounds of Camp Pendleton since it ignited early Monday afternoon.
The Pipeline Fire has burned an estimated 1,065 acres as of Tuesday afternoon with 0% containment, according to a Cal Fire status update.
The fire prompted precautionary evacuations of some populated sections of the base on Monday. However, it has caused no reported structural damage or injuries.
Displaced personnel were being allowed back into those areas on Tuesday morning.
Heavy smoke from the fire also led to air-quality health warnings in parts of the northern San Diego area, including Alpine, Fallbrook, Pala, Ramona, and Valley Center.
The San Diego County Air Pollution Control District said that atmospheric conditions should be considered unhealthy for all people in locales with heavily smoky conditions and unsafe for “sensitive groups” in communities with lighter smoke.
“If you are near the affected communities and smell smoke it is advised that you limit physical/outdoor activity,” SDCAPCD said.
“If possible, stay indoors to limit your exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone, especially those residents with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children.”
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
