The bicyclist killed in a hit-and-run in far northwest suburban Hampshire this week has been identified.
Twenty-seven-year-old Ebony Calvillo, of Hampshire, was pronounced dead at the scene where she was hit on Route 20 north of Big Timber Road, the Kane County Coroner’s office said.
Preliminary findings from an autopsy found Calvillo suffered multiple injuries “consistent with a bicyclist being struck by an automobile,” the coroner’s office said.
Toxicology samples were sent to a national forensic lab for analysis, however.
“The Kane County Coroner’s Office is working with the Hampshire Police Department and the Fox Valley Major Crimes Task Force in their ongoing investigations of this incident. The Coroner, Dr. Monica Silva, wishes to extend her deepest sympathy to Ebony Calvillo’s loved ones,” the coroner’s office said in a statement.
The crash shut down a long stretch of road in Kane County for an investigation as police asked for the public’s help.
The department first learned of the crash about 12:40 a.m. Monday when officers were dispatched to the area near US 20 between Big Timber and Gast Roads for reports of a traffic crash involving a bicyclist. According to a release, a caller said there was debris and a person laying in the street. The caller and another passing driver stopped to render medical aid, police said.
Hours later, US 20 remained closed in both directions between Big Timber Road and Higgins Road as part of the accident investigation, with the Hampshire Police Department, Kane County Major Crimes Task Force and Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team on scene.
“US Route 20 between Big Timber Road and Gast road will remain closed until the on-scene investigation concludes, which could be several more hours,” police said. “Please avoid the area and use an alternate route.”
Police also asked anyone who may have traveled on US Route 20 between Big Timber and Gast Roads between 12:30 and 12:50 a.m. to contact officials if they have any information or surveillance video that may help investigators. Detectives also asked anyone who may have see the bicyclist riding prior to the crash, or who has any information about the vehicle to come forward.
