The folks at Pro Football Focus have ranked all 32 starting quarterbacks ahead of the 2026 NFL season. And if you are a Chicago Bears fan curious to see where Caleb Williams lands, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
Chicago’s QB1 checks in at No. 13 on PFF’s preseason quarterback rankings. Williams is sandwiched between Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and Seattle Seahawks Super Bowl-winning signal-caller Sam Darnold. Williams is the second-highest-ranked NFC North quarterback (Jordan Love of the Packers comes in at sixth!) and the sixth-highest-ranked QB in the NFC. In short, Williams is in good company. And he has room to grow.
It’s not as if I wasn’t already looking forward to the upcoming NFL season. But seeing where Caleb Williams ranks on this preseason list of top quarterbacks gives me a little extra boost.

Williams made the sophomore leap many hoped for after the Bears hired Ben Johnson as head coach. “Iceman” led Chicago to its first Divisional Round appearance in 15 years and recorded 37 big-time throws, second among NFL quarterbacks behind league MVP Matthew Stafford.
The cover athlete for Madden NFL 27 is still a bit of a gunslinger, as his negatively graded throw rate ranked 38th at the position. Even so, Williams is trending in the right direction and appears well on his way to living up to the immense expectations that came with being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Maybe this is just the result of years of conditioning that led me to expect the worst when it comes to a Bears quarterback preseason ranking, but I was genuinely shocked to see where Caleb Williams checks in on PFF’s preseason QB ranking. To be clear, I believe Williams has established himself as a quarterback in the top half of this league’s starters. But seeing an analytics-forward site like Pro Football Focus share similar sentiments is what made me do a double-take. Simply put, I am not used to analysts saying positive things about Chicago quarterbacks. This will take some time to get used to, but I can adapt.

It has been quite the offseason for Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. He has earned praise from Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary, landed the Madden NFL ’27 cover, and done a bunch of notable media spots since the end of last season. And soon enough, Williams will be gearing up for the season ahead. The rising third-year starter has laid out some lofty goals for 2026 (and beyond), while Head Coach Ben Johnson continues to challenge him publicly in an attempt to push the No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 NFL Draft to reach his potential. It all adds up to a compelling build-up to the 2026 season.
I’m not sure exactly what it will take for Caleb Williams to crack the top-10 in next year’s PFF quarterback rankings. But the 2026 projections make me think that it is realistic that another strong season will help build his case. For what it’s worth, ESPN’s forecast has Williams throwing for 3,821 yards and 25 touchdowns. Projections are conservative by nature, which is why I feel as if this projection looks more like a floor than a ceiling for Chicago’s starting quarterback.
