You May Want To Stop Pairing This Popular Food With Your Morning Coffee, Dietitians Warn ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Sipping coffee first thing in the morning has its pros and cons. "Coffee is usually consumed on an empty stomach, so when it's paired with certain foods, it's much easier to notice how they interact," explains Dr. Chris Mohr, Ph.D., RD, a fitness and nutrition advisor for Garage Gym Reviews. "Since a lot of people have a morning routine they repeat every day, those pairings can affect both your digestion and how you feel throughout your day."

"Knowing how different foods or drinks may affect you throughout the day can help you make more informed breakfast choices," Dr. Mohr tells Parade.

"I suggest you space grapefruit at least 10 hours away from caffeine to allow most of the caffeine—about 75%—to clear from your body on its own," explains Julia Zumpano, RD, a Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian. "Caffeine can take up to 25 to 30 hours to be almost completely cleared from your system."

She says that grapefruit juice is often more concentrated than whole fruit, so you may notice even longer caffeine buzzes or worse heartburn or interactions with medications.

Does Grapefruit Make Caffeine Last Longer?

Grapefruit may make your coffee-induced energy jolt last longer. Decades-old (1990s!) research is mixed, with some studies suggesting it does and others not finding the effect.

The extended buzz may or may not be a selling point. "For people who are already sensitive to caffeine, having it stick around longer can tip them into feeling overcaffeinated—jittery, anxious or like their heart is racing even hours after their last sip," says Malkani, who is also the author of Safe and Simple Food Allergy Prevention. "It can also disturb sleep if the caffeine hasn't fully cleared by bedtime, but for most people, this possible change in clearance is subtle and often not noticeable."

Besides extending caffeine's effects, whole grapefruit and grapefruit juice might interact with medications and contribute to heartburn.

Dr. Mohr notes that the medications most likely to be affected include:

Cholesterol-lowering statinsSome blood pressure and heart rhythm drugsOrgan-transplant medicationsCertain anti-anxiety medicationsSome allergy medicines

Is my specific drug affected? How much, if any, grapefruit juice can you have? What other fruits or juices may also affect your drug in a similar way to grapefruit juice?

It's already common for people to experience some heartburn from coffee alone.

He shares that people who are already prone to heartburn or acid reflux are more likely to experience discomfort, explaining, "If you're going to combine the two, it's best to have them with another food."
