ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County has secured the final funding source to rebuild the pavilion at Highland Park that was demolished over 60 years ago.

New York State has set aside $3.9 million to rebuild the Highland Park Children’s Pavilion, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office, closing the funding gap for the $7.73 million project.

The original pavilion, designed by nationally renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, drew a crowd of thousands to Highland Park for its grand opening 135 years ago. It stood on top of a hill near the reservoir, but eventually deteriorated and was demolished in 1963.

At the time of its demolition, Monroe County promised to rebuild the pavilion. After decades of delays, construction is expected to begin in 2028. The pavilion is expected to open in early 2028.

The new 6,000-square-foot pavilion aims to honor the original structure. It will have a three-story circular timber frame and will be situated at one of the park’s highest points.

Lawmakers say the new pavilion will feature modern accessibility features, including an elevator to the top level, where people can see views of the city, Lake Ontario, and the distant Bristol Hills. The Highland Park Conservancy, a nonprofit to support the park, says it has raised $1.3 million for the project and that the design phase is already complete.
