ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Fans at The Boot Room Pub, a soccer pub on Winton Road, were heartbroken on Monday night after Team USA fell 4-1 to Belgium in the round of 16 in the World Cup.
After giving up a goal in the ninth minute, U.S. midfielder Malik Tillman tied the game when he scored off a free kick in the 31st minute. However, that was Team USA’s final goal. Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere once again found the back of the net in the first half. Then, Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku both scored in the second half, with Belgium’s final goal coming in three minutes of stoppage time.
With the loss in Seattle, Team USA became the third and final host nation to lose before the quarterfinals. Pat Agopian, a soccer fan at The Boot Room, said it was a tough way to lose, but the team made the U.S. proud.
“You know, I would have liked to see them get to at least the quarterfinals because that’s their best ever result, but I think all in all they made America proud,” he said. “Tough way to lose today, but I think they can hang their heads high and look forward and hopefully next time they finish it out a little bit stronger.”
Team USA also lost in the round of 16 during the 2022 World Cup. Team USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino said the team wasn’t able to execute the way they did in past games. This marks the first men’s World Cup that the U.S. has hosted since 1994. There have been several viewing parties in Rochester, including for previous Team USA games.
