Joliet residents face frequent water outages despite paying full bills ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Multiple families in Joliet said they are buying water at grocery stores, showering with water from jugs and still paying their full water bills despite the ongoing issues.

The residents live in homes on Fir Lane that are less than 20 years old, however many said they’ve been without running water two to three days a week for the past four to five years.

Photos shared with NBC Chicago/Telemundo Chicago showed buckets, jugs and thirty-gallon containers lined up in basements and garages.

Residents who contacted NBC Chicago said more than 30 home are affected, including many built within the past six years. They said the water goes out with no warning, often with no timeline for when it will come back.

Residents said they have repeatedly called the city and left messages. When someone does call back, they said the answer is the same: the pipes are old, and repairs are underway.

Even with the interruptions, the bills keep coming.

One resident said she spent $45 on water last weekend after her tap ran dry on Friday evening and didn’t come back until Sunday night.

“I have a fully disabled husband living in my house…” resident Mattie Martin said “…We don’t know how long it will last.”

“With the new water meters that came into the homes…” another resident, Josh Brown, stated. “We’re paying more, you know.”

NBC Chicago and Telemundo Chicago reached out to the city of Joliet for a response.

In a statement, the city said it took over the Southeast Joliet Sanitary District Water System on Feb. 1. The city acknowledged the system was in worse condition than expected, saying it hadn’t been properly maintained by the previous district.

On June 2, the City Council approved a nearly $3 million contract with Austin Tyler Construction to begin repairs. The city said work is expected to start in approximately two weeks but cautioned that even after work is done, significant improvements will still be needed.

The full plan, funded in part by Will County, could take up to 10 years to complete.

Residents said they plan to attend a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday to demand answers directly from city leaders.
