A 2027 NHL Mock Draft? Already? Why Not! The Blackhawks Have 3 Picks to Discuss ...Middle East

Yeah, we’re less than two weeks removed from the 2026 NHL Draft, but Corey Pronman at The Athletic already published a way-too-early 2027 NHL Mock Draft. And, on July 6 with very little else going on in the hockey world, why not take some time to look at what the Blackhawks might do in his projections.

After all, the Blackhawks should own three picks in the first round next June.

Pronman has the Blackhawks’ own selection coming at No. 3 overall — a result that wouldn’t make many fans happy about the on-ice performance during the 2026-27 season. At that spot, he has Chicago selecting Russian forward Nazar Privalov — yes, another Nazar. I’m excited.

This Nazar is a big boy — he’s listed already at 6-4 and 227 pounds at 17. Here’s part of what Pronman wrote about the pick for the Blackhawks:

Privalov is an extremely athletic and skilled winger. He has clear NHL speed and excellent hands, showing the transition skills to be a premier play-driver at the next level. He’s very creative as a handler and passer, showing the instincts to create chances off the rush and from the perimeter. Privalov is talented, but it’s his motor that defines him. He’s a big, mean, punishing forward who embraces the physical parts of the game. He projects as an impact power winger in the NHL.

Pronman notes, however, that Privalov has reportedly already signed a four-year contract in the KHL that begins with the 2026-27 season. He is represented by Dan Milstein’s Gold Star agency, which also reps Artyom Levshunov. Whether that contract would be an issue for the Blackhawks (or another team) with a top-five pick will be interesting. But the size and skill package is undeniable.

The second pick Pronman has the Blackhawks making doesn’t come until No. 28 overall, the pick coming from the Edmonton Oilers. There, he has the Hawks selecting another Russian player: right-handed defenseman Vladimir Shtyrkhunov.

This is an interesting selection for the Blackhawks because of a couple factors: one, he’s Russian and the contract situation (though not noted) could keep him out of North America for a few years. The other is his size; Shtyrkhunov is listed at 6-0 and just 157 pounds.

After selecting Xavier Villeneuve in the 2026 NHL Draft, taking two somewhat undersize defensemen would seem to be counter to a lot of how the Blackhawks’ front office has built their blue line thus far.

Here’s part of what Pronman wrote about the Blackhawks selecting Shtyrkhunov:

Shtyrkhunov was quite good this season in Russia between his play in junior and with the national team. He makes a lot happen with the puck due to his great combination of speed and skill. He’s one of the better skaters in his age group who will clearly be able to attack at an NHL tempo. He closes on checks well and projects as a two-way player against pros.

He is also represented by Dan Milstein’s Gold Star agency, who have cornered the market on Russian players.

The Blackhawks’ third pick in the 2027 NHL Draft comes from Florida, which was top-ten protected in 2026 (much to our chagrin). Pronman has the Panthers winning the Stanley Cup, and that pick coming off the board at No. 32 overall. There, he has the Blackhawks selecting Norwegian goalie Felix Timraz-Westin.

Timraz-Westin is a big goalie (6-6, 201) who has played in a few international tournaments for Norway, including four appearances in the U-18 World Championship. Here’s part of what Pronman wrote about that pick:

Timraz-Westin is quite athletic for a goaltender his size and has the potential to take over a game. He’s been somewhat inconsistent in his time so far in junior, but the talent is there if he puts it together in his draft season to be a high pick.

The grain of salt I’ll put on at least the final pick in the first round of a mock draft 50 weeks ahead of the actual selections is we’re talking about lottery tickets with ceilings based on hope as much as size and talent and production on the ice already. I would be fascinated to see the Blackhawks use all three of their first-round picks on players from the other side of the Atlantic.
