A gloomy weekend makes this Monday feel less like a Monday. Saturday’s rainy day had Monday-like vibes, which left Sunday feeling like a random floater day. The calendar would feel more normal if we had a Chicago Bears game to build our schedule around. Just saying…
Some clarity on the possibility of Pope Leo XIV accientally leaking an upcoming Bears uniform release:Don’t believe this is a “leak”. These are available for sale and are a “fashion” jersey often used for autographs too. I still believe the rivalry uniform will be a navy blue color scheme. t.co/JzJE3wz7Np
— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 5, 2026 Even though I didn’t find a jersey that matched during my cursory search on Fanatics or the Bears’ website, it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t out there to be purchased. That this appears to be a jersey that is already out there in the universe helps me understand why I didn’t give the leak possibility a second thought after its first impression. Perhaps this should serve as a reminder that you should always trust your gut/instinct.THE BN BEARS PODCAST: Apple | Spotify | YouTube
ESPN’s Tyler Fulghum sees a breakout season on the horizon for Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III:He already showed on tape as a rookie that he is elite with the ball in his hands. His underlying efficiency metrics (albeit on a small sample), rank among some of the best all-time as a rookie. Had he reached qualifying thresholds, he would have ranked third among all WRs in yard per route run (2.92), behind only Puka Nacua and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Other rookies to post a YPRR north of 2.5 in the last decade include Nacua, Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, A.J. Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. That is the bull ceiling case for Burden: a top-5 player at his position currently going as WR28 in ESPN drafts.
Fulghum opines that Year 2 for Burden is setting up nicely for a breakout. Another year of Ben Johnson calling plays as head coach. An offseason of work with quarterback Caleb Williams. And the availability of an estimated 150 targets positions Burden for a big season. We saw the start of Burden’s breakout late last year when he took on an expanded role while fellow wideout Rome Odunze was hurt. How Burden and Odunze co-exist in an offense with only one ball will be fun to follow. Running back Kyle Monangai gets a mention from Tristan H. Cockroft as a sleeper running back. That’s good to keep in mind when your fantasy football drafts start popping up on your calendar. Bears RB Kyle Monangai. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images Over at CBS Sports, Zachary Pereles conducts a re-do of the 2024 NFL Draft — and I don’t really like it that much. I suppose you could work to create a compelling case to take Drake Maye, but it isn’t something I’d be interested in right now. However, choosing Georgia receiver Ladd McConkey instead of Rome Odunze is something that would be worth the conversation. Even then, I’m not sure I’d want McConkey over some of the other players on the board at the time. Cornerback Cooper DeJean, offensive tackle Olu Fashanu, defensive tackle Byron Murphy II, and edge defender Laiatu Latu are among the top-15 picks who could have made sense for the Bears in this hypothetical re-draft. Chad Reuter has a more fun NFL Draft exercise. Reuter does a 7-round team-by-team mock draft for a win-now season. This is who he has going to the Bears: EDGE Maxx Crosby (Round 1), QB Jaxson Dart (Round 2), WR Chris Olave (Round 3), LB Carson Schwesinger (Round 4), OL Trey Smith (Round 5), RB Breece Hall (Round 6), S Minkah Fitzpatrick (Round 7). This team certainly has balance. And so long as Ben Johnson is the coach, I can see a path to being competitive. But the drop-off at quarterback is something I can’t get past. Our countdown toward the start of the NFL regular season continues:We are 6⃣9⃣ days from the Bears kicking off the 2026 regular season vs. the Panthers.Do you remember when Jared Allen was on the Bears? It's OK if you don't. pic.twitter.com/sqrCt9Mum7
— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) July 6, 2026 I’ll understand if you don’t recall highlights from Jared Allen’s time with the Bears. It was a short-lived blip on the radar for Allen, who generated 5.5 sacks in 18 games over two seasons with the team before being traded to the Carolina Panthers for a sixth-round pick, which was subsequently traded to the Rams in a deal that allowed Chicago to draft linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski. Some other notable Bears players to wear No. 69 over the years: DT Henry Melton (2010-13), OL Fred Miller (2005-08), DL/OL Rashaad Coward (2017-20), OL Ja’Tyre Carter (2022-23), and DL Tanoh Kpassagnon (2025). Defensive lineman Jeremiah Martin has been assigned No. 69 going into this season, per the team’s website. We are 10 weeks away from our first Monday Night Football game of the 2026 NFL season. I’ve shared the full MNF schedule in a post that includes our top-5 Monday night matchups.FOLLOW BN BEARS ON SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook | Twitter | BlueSky
The Chicago Cubs avoided a sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals by securing a 6-4 win on Sunday at Wrigley Field. I’m glad the Cardinals are out of town. They bring bad vibes to the neighborhood. NBA moves I missed while on vacation: The Los Angeles Lakers swung a sign-and-trade deal to acquire center Walker Kessler from the Utah Jazz. With LeBron James out of the picture, it will be interesting to see how the Lakers build around Luka Dončić. Meanwhile, I’m exercising levels of patience I didn’t know I had when thinking about the Bulls’ latest rebuilding efforts. The NHLPA announced 15 players who filed for arbitration, but one notable Chicago Blackhawks player was not among those mentioned.More Bears From Bleacher Nation: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
