There was a moment, during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2011, that the camera captured a scene which the world would repeatedly hear about years later over the course of Donald Trump’s two presidential terms.
Trump – at that time musing publicly about running for the Republican party nomination ahead of the 2012 election – was not known for having a sense of humour about himself, and then-President Barack Obama was going to take advantage of it.
Referring to Trump’s long quest to have Obama release his birth certificate to prove he was born in the US and not Kenya, as Trump claimed, Obama told the gathered Washington power players: “No-one is happier, no-one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than the Donald.
“That’s because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter – like did we fake the moon landing? What really happened in Roswell? And where are (dead rap stars) Biggie and Tupac?”
As the room laughed, the camera cut to Trump, who sat there in the crowd, completely stony-faced. But Obama wasn’t done.
Promising to offer even more than a certificate, Obama showed what he said was his birth video, but turned out to be a clip from African-themed movie The Lion King. Again, not a flicker from Trump.
One of Trump’s future comic enemies as president, Seth Meyers, was the host that night and also got in a few licks.
“Donald Trump has been saying that he’ll run for president as a Republican, which is surprising since I’d just assumed he was running as a joke,” he said.
“Donald Trump often appears on Fox, which is ironic, because a fox often appears on Donald Trump’s head.”

Since winning the presidency himself in 2016 and again in 2024, Trump has posted a string of sometimes bitter and racist words and images criticising Obama and his wife, Michelle.

“Look, you got to ask him what it is that … the obsession,” Obama said. “Obviously, you know, I have a room in his head – a suite in his head.”
Trump did nothing to dispel that notion on Sunday, posting a falsified image of the Obamas boarding an Air Force One that had been spray-painted with graffiti.

The latest image shows the Obamas smiling and waving at the top of stairs alongside a baby blue and white presidential plane with graffiti painted on it that included the Democrat’s campaign slogan “Yes We Can,” “Obama” and “BLM,” short for Black Lives Matter.

Sunday’s post also followed one from last month when Trump shared a doctored image of Obama’s new presidential library in Chicago, so that it looked like the building had a large bag of garbage on top and was surrounded by a wasteland.
“The Obama Library ten years from now will be a ‘Mecca’ for those who hate America! President DJT,” he wrote then.
